These are the four things I learned about at the January Education program for ISES NJ North on Tuesday, January 26, 2016. Almost 60 people participated in the program held at the gorgeous Morris Museum in Morristown, NJ.
Who would’ve imagined the life lessons one can learn through the art of juggling!
Our presenter, Jen Slaw, was AMAZE-BALLS!
She is a famous and accomplished juggler and she did a masterful job demonstrating how to have BALANCE in your life through the use of juggling. While she talked about work & life balance, we as she juggled 3, then 4, then 5 balls.
We were able to witness the role that FOCUS plays in order to balance multiple tasks at the same time.
Next, she paired us all off into teams of two to learn the basics of juggling…with each other.
I worked with someone I’d just met that night, which was perfect because neither of us had any preconceived notions of working together as a team.
Tossing the ball back and forth took some doing and throughout the process, the two of us really had to laser focus on our process. This helped us develop TRUST. We messed up over and over and each time we LAUGHED at ourselves rather than getting frustrated. The next challenge was for our entire table: We had 6 people at our table and appointed one leader. The leader began the exercise by tossing the ball to another and then that person tossed to another and so on until all 6 had caught the ball. THEN…We continued the exact pattern over and over again. This required extreme focus on the person throwing the ball to you and who you were throwing the ball to each time. We quickly discovered we could not be distracted paying attention to anything else happening between anyone else at the table.
We started with 1 ball, then 2 balls, then 3 balls, 4 balls, 5 balls and 6 all being thrown and caught at the exact same time in the exact order each time.
WHEW! An amazing exercise in FOCUS, (SILENT) COMMUNICATION and TRUST. By the end of the exercise, I believed that I would happily want every one of the people at the table on my team for an event!
Along with a tremendously useful education program, we indulged in a delicious dinner catered by Encore Catering, had a perfect backdrop for lighting and sound, photography, and the always-fun photo booth for goofy friendship shots provided by Eloquent Studios.
If you missed the January program, you really missed a great one! But don’t worry…we’ve got a fantastic networking program coming up in late February!
